GSSM celebrates 20 students named 2027 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. Twenty seniors at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, recognizing them among the nation’s highest-achieving high school students.
More than 1.2 million juniors from approximately 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of those students, more than 16,000 were selected as semifinalists, being less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors.
GSSM’s 20 semifinalists represent communities across South Carolina and reflect the academic talent, curiosity and commitment to excellence that students bring to the school.

“Having 20 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists is a proud moment for GSSM,” said President Danny Dorsel. “These students represent communities across South Carolina, and we are honored to support them as they continue to learn, grow and prepare for what comes next.”
To advance to finalist standing, semifinalists must complete a detailed scholarship application and meet additional academic requirements. Students must demonstrate an outstanding academic record throughout high school, receive an endorsement and recommendation from a high school official, submit an essay and earn qualifying SAT or ACT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test.
More than 15,000 semifinalists nationwide are expected to advance to finalist standing. Finalists will be notified in February.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in spring 2027. The program includes 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, approximately 700 corporate-sponsored awards and about 3,500 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards. Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and continuing through July.
The recognition of 20 semifinalists underscores GSSM’s mission to provide South Carolina’s motivated students with advanced academic opportunities that challenge them to grow as scholars, leaders and problem-solvers prepared to make an impact in their communities and beyond.
